Psychotherapy / Counselling

I offer individual psychotherapy and counselling for adults. Counselling generally refers to shorter duration therapeutic work that is focused on resolving immediate issues, challenges or problems. Psychotherapy tends to delve more deeply into issues and is therefore generally longer term work. As well as resolving entrenched psychological issues, psychotherapy aims to enhance self-awareness and foster growth and development.

My primary therapeutic orientation is Gestalt psychotherapy, which is a therapeutic approach formed on the foundations of relational philosophy. Relational philosophy is based on a worldview that human experience occurs in contexts where people are mutually influencing each other. This interdependent and interconnected worldview also understands that people make sense of their experience based on their own perspective. A fundamental principle of relational Gestalt psychotherapy is that each therapeutic process must be unique and I’m firmly committed to finding the right approach for each client.

I also utilise insights and interventions from a range of other therapeutic modalities, including psychodynamic theories, attachment theories, mindfulness and the enneagram. While I believe that all therapeutic modalities are of value, my therapeutic style is relational, humanistic and existential. I’m less interested in medical, behavioural or diagnostic approaches to mental health treatment.

Please note I don’t offer relationship counselling or work with people under 17 years old.

Supervision

I offer supervision for individuals and groups based primarily on the relational matrix model for supervision. Working as a psychotherapist and counsellor can be isolating and regular supervision is a profoundly important support. The relational matrix model addresses the multiple, complex layers involved in the practice of supervision. I’ve worked with a diverse range of supervisees from various therapeutic backgrounds. I’ve also provided group supervision in a variety of contexts.
